Mid-drive motors sit at the bottom bracket and drive the bike's chain, so they multiply torque through the gears the same way your legs do. That is why they climb so well and why cargo bikes and serious commuters favor them. It also means the drivetrain does more work: chains, chainrings and cassettes wear faster than on a hub-drive bike, and the parts that attach to the motor are often specific to that motor family rather than standard bike parts.

The aftermarket is dominated by Bafang's BBS01, BBS02 and BBSHD kits and their accessories, alongside a smaller set of other conversion motors, while factory mid-drives from Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha and Brose are mostly dealer-serviced and use their own chainrings and covers. Whichever you own, the first thing to identify is the exact motor model, because chainrings, spider adapters, gear sensors, controllers and displays are typically model-specific. The second is your frame's bottom bracket shell width, since conversion kits are sold in a few shell lengths and a kit that is too short or too long will not clamp securely.

Chainline is the detail people underestimate. A mid-drive's chainring sits in a fixed spot, and if it does not line up reasonably with the cassette the chain will drop or wear out quickly; offset chainrings and narrow-wide teeth exist precisely to fix that. Electrically, mid-drive kits are closed systems, so stick to parts made for your motor and confirm compatibility with the seller. Lekkie Bling Ring 42T Chainring for Bafang BBS02/BBSHD

The stock Bafang chainring sits far outboard, which gives many BBS02 and BBSHD builds a poor chainline and extra chain wear. Lekkie's Bling Ring is the popular fix: a machined aluminum narrow-wide chainring that moves the teeth inboard to improve chainline and holds the chain better off-road. It comes in several tooth counts; 42T is a common all-round choice that lowers gearing a bit from the stock 46T for better climbing. Make sure you buy the version for your motor — BBS02 and BBSHD use different spiders.

Replacement Speed Sensor and Magnet for Bafang BBS02/BBSHD (generic)

The speed sensor on a Bafang mid-drive is a small magnet-sensing puck that mounts on the chainstay with a spoke magnet passing it. When the magnet drifts or the sensor lead gets snagged, the display shows an error or stops reporting speed and the motor may cut out. The replacement is cheap and takes ten minutes. Aftermarket listings sell a compatible sensor with the Bafang-style plug plus a spoke magnet; confirm the plug matches the one on your motor's harness (the common one is a small round waterproof connector).

How to choose mid-drive components

Exact motor model

BBS01, BBS02 and BBSHD use different chainring mounts and many different small parts. Read the sticker on your motor and buy parts listed for that model.

Bottom bracket shell width

Conversion kits are sold for standard 68 to 73mm shells, with longer versions for wider fat-bike shells. Measure your shell before ordering; a wrong length will not clamp securely.

Chainring size and offset

Smaller rings (around 36 to 42 teeth on many setups) help climbing and reduce motor strain; offset and narrow-wide rings improve chainline and chain retention. Confirm the ring is made for your motor's mount.

Gear and brake sensors

A gear-shift sensor cuts motor power briefly during shifts and noticeably extends chain and cassette life; it must match your motor's connector. Brake cutoff sensors are equally model-specific.

Drivetrain strength

Pair a mid-drive with an e-bike rated chain and a steel cassette or freewheel. Light alloy parts wear quickly under motor torque.

Compatibility notes

  • Chainrings, covers, controllers and displays for mid-drive kits are generally model-specific; a BBSHD chainring will not mount on a BBS02. Confirm the motor model before buying anything.
  • Kit shell-width versions (68 to 73mm, and longer fat-bike sizes) are not interchangeable; measure your bottom bracket shell.
  • Factory mid-drives (Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, Brose) use their own chainring interfaces and usually need dealer parts; generic kit parts do not fit.

Installation considerations

  • Remove the battery before working on any wiring, and use the maker's lockring tool and torque values when fitting the motor to the shell.
  • Check chainline after fitting a new chainring by sighting from behind; the chain should run close to straight in the middle gears.
  • Fit a gear-shift sensor if your motor supports it; it is the single best upgrade for drivetrain life.
  • After installation, shift through every gear on a stand under light power and confirm the brake cutoffs work before riding.

Maintenance tips

  • Check chain wear monthly with a chain checker; replace at 0.5 percent on 11-speed and 0.75 percent on wider chains to protect the cassette and ring.
  • Shift before hills and ease pedal pressure while shifting; mid-drives punish shifts under full power.
  • Keep the motor case and cable grommets clean and dry; avoid aiming a hose at the bottom bracket area.
  • Retorque the motor mounting lockring and chainring bolts after the first few hundred miles.

Which Bafang mid-drive do I have?

Look at the label on the motor body; it lists the model (BBS01, BBS02, BBSHD) and the voltage and wattage. Chainrings and most accessories are sold by that model name.

Why does my mid-drive eat chains?
