E-Bike Chain Keeps Falling Off

  • Chain drops off the chainring when you stop pedaling or hit a bump
  • Chain overshoots the smallest or largest cog into the frame or spokes
  • Chain skips or jumps under pedal or motor load
  • Chain slaps loudly on the chainstay on rough ground
  • Problem started after a crash, a wheel removal, or a new chain

E-bike drivetrains see more torque than regular bikes, and on a hub-motor bike the motor keeps the chain moving while you are not pedaling, so a chain that is a little loose or a derailleur that is a little off drops more often than it would on an analog bike. Mid-drives add even more chain load, so chain wear and chainring wear arrive sooner.

Almost every dropped chain traces to one of six things: derailleur limit screws out of adjustment, a bent derailleur hanger, wrong B-tension or cable tension, a worn chain or cassette, a loose rear wheel (common on hub motors), or a single-chainring setup that lacks a chain guide. Work through them in that order. A chain that drops to the inside of the chainring is usually chainring or chainline related; a chain that overshoots the cassette is usually the derailleur.

Safety first

Never open a battery pack. Stop immediately if you see swelling, smell burning, or feel heat at the battery or connectors. Do not cut or splice wires. Unplug the battery before touching connectors. When in doubt, stop and get an E-Bike Assessment.

Possible causes

  1. Cause 1

    Rear derailleur limit screws out of adjustment

    The high (H) and low (L) limit screws stop the derailleur from moving the chain past the smallest and largest cogs. If the chain overshoots into the spokes or drops between the smallest cog and the frame, a limit is set too loose. Thread-on freewheels (common on hub-motor bikes) and cheap derailleurs drift easily.

    Safe checks

    • With the bike in a stand or propped up, shift to the smallest cog and look from behind: the upper jockey wheel should sit directly under the cog, not outboard of it. Turn the H screw in a quarter turn at a time to bring it inboard.
    • Shift to the largest cog: the jockey wheel should sit under it, not pushing toward the spokes. Turn the L screw in to limit travel.
    • Shift through all gears by hand-pedaling and watch for hesitation or overshoot.

  2. Cause 2

    Bent derailleur hanger

    The derailleur hanger is a soft aluminum tab designed to bend in a crash or when the bike falls over drive-side down. A bent hanger tilts the whole derailleur, and no amount of limit-screw adjustment makes the chain track straight. Shifting that is good in some gears and bad in others, or a derailleur cage that is visibly not parallel to the cogs, is the sign.

    Safe checks

    • Sight from behind the bike: the derailleur cage and jockey wheels should be in line with the cogs, vertical and parallel.
    • Look for a hanger that is obviously bent or cracked.
    • Hanger straightening needs an alignment tool; a shop does this quickly, or you can replace the hanger if you can identify the model.

  3. Cause 3

    B-tension, cable tension or chain length wrong

    The B-tension screw sets the gap between the upper jockey wheel and the cassette; too close and the chain rubs and skips, too far and shifting is sloppy. Cable tension that has stretched makes the chain hesitate and drop between cogs. A chain that is too long (common after a replacement) slaps and derails on bumps because the derailleur cannot take up the slack.

    Safe checks

    • In the largest cog, check that the upper jockey wheel clears the cog by a small gap; adjust the B screw if it is touching or far away.
    • If the chain hesitates going to larger cogs, add a quarter turn of cable tension at the barrel adjuster; if it hesitates going to smaller cogs, back it off.
    • In the smallest cog, the derailleur cage should still hold tension and the chain should not sag and touch itself.

    Worn chain, cassette or chainring

    A stretched chain no longer matches the tooth spacing, so it rides up and skips, especially under motor torque. Worn cogs and chainrings become hooked (shark-fin teeth) and stop holding the chain. E-bike chains should be checked regularly; replacing a chain early protects the cassette and chainring.

    Safe checks

    • Use a chain wear checker: replace at 0.5% on 11–12 speed, 0.75% on 7–10 speed.
    • Look for hooked or shark-fin teeth on the chainring and the most-used cogs; compare to a less-used cog.
    • If a brand-new chain skips on specific cogs, those cogs are worn and the cassette or freewheel needs replacing.

  5. Cause 5

    Rear wheel not straight in the dropouts

    A hub-motor wheel that was reinstalled slightly crooked shifts the whole cassette relative to the derailleur, so limits and indexing are suddenly wrong. A loose axle nut lets the wheel walk under motor torque, and the problem comes and goes.

    Safe checks

    • Check that the wheel is centered between the chainstays and the axle nuts are tight to spec, with the torque washer seated.
    • Re-check derailleur alignment after reseating the wheel.

  6. Cause 6

    Single chainring without a guide, or a bent chainring

    Many e-bikes run one chainring in front. Without a narrow-wide ring or a chain guide, rough ground and back-pedaling can shake the chain off the inside. A bent chainring (from a dropped bike or a crank strike) wobbles and throws the chain. Chain lube matters too: a dry, dirty chain is stiffer and derails more easily.

    Safe checks

    • Spin the cranks backward slowly and watch the chainring for wobble or bent teeth.
    • Check whether the bike has a chain guide or guard and whether it is intact and positioned close to the chain.
    • Clean and lube the chain; a stiff link that will not flex will drop the chain every time it reaches the derailleur.

    Note where the chain drops

    Inside or outside the chainring? Off the smallest or largest cog? On bumps or while shifting? That decides where to start.

    Check the rear wheel

    Centered in the dropouts, axle nuts tight to spec, torque washer seated.

    Check hanger and cage alignment

    From behind, cage and jockey wheels parallel to the cogs. If bent, stop adjusting and get it aligned.

    Set limit screws

    H screw for the smallest cog, L screw for the largest. Quarter turns, check by hand-pedaling.

  5. 5

    Check B-tension and cable tension

    Small gap between jockey wheel and largest cog; adjust barrel adjuster for crisp shifts in both directions.

    Measure chain wear

    Chain checker tool. Replace if worn; inspect cogs and chainring for hooked teeth.

    Inspect chainring and stiff links

    Spin backward and look for wobble; flex each link through the derailleur to find a stiff one.

    Clean and lube

    Degrease, dry, lube every roller, wipe excess. Test ride gently before relying on it.

When to stop troubleshooting

  • The derailleur hanger is bent or cracked — it needs a proper alignment tool or replacement.
  • The chain has gone into the spokes or between the freewheel and frame and the wheel or derailleur may be damaged.
  • The rear wheel will not seat square or the axle nuts will not hold torque.
  • The cassette or freewheel is visibly worn and you are not equipped to remove it (hub-motor freewheels need the right remover).
  • A mid-drive motor's chainring or crank is loose or wobbling at the spindle.

Frequently asked questions

Does an e-bike need a special chain?

An e-bike-rated chain has stronger plates and pins for the added torque, and it is worth it on mid-drives especially. Match the speed count (7, 8, 9, 10…) to your cassette or freewheel either way.

How often should I replace the chain?

Check wear every few hundred miles with a chain checker. Many e-bike riders replace chains every 1,000–2,000 miles; mid-drive riders sooner. Replacing on time saves the cassette and chainring.

Why does the chain fall off when I stop pedaling on my hub-motor bike?

The motor keeps the wheel turning while the chain goes slack, so any slack, a long chain, or a loose derailleur spring lets it slap and jump. Tighten up limits and B-tension, check chain length, and consider a chain guide.

Can I adjust the derailleur myself?

Limit screws, B-tension and cable tension are reasonable home jobs with a small Phillips or hex driver and patience. A bent hanger, a worn cassette, or a shifter problem is where a shop earns its fee.

Is shifting under motor power bad for the chain?

Yes. Ease off the pedals and, on a throttle bike, off the throttle for a moment when you shift. Shifting under full torque bends chain plates and wears cogs quickly.
