Fenders

Full-coverage and fat-tire fenders sized to your wheel and tire width.

Fenders keep road spray off you and grit off the drivetrain and electronics, which matters more on an e-bike than a regular bike because there is more electrical stuff under there to stay dry. Many e-bikes ship with fenders that are narrow, rattly, or broken by the first curb hop, and replacing them with a set that actually covers the tire is a cheap upgrade. Getting a set that fits, though, takes two measurements. On a hub-drive bike the rear fender also protects the motor cable and the connector area behind the bottom bracket from constant spray.

Fenders are sized by wheel diameter and tire width. The fender must follow the curve of your wheel size (20, 26, 27.5, 29 inch or 700c) and be wider than your tire, typically by 10 to 20mm; a 4-inch fat tire needs a fender around 100 to 120mm wide, while a 2-inch commuter tire wants something around 60 to 70mm. Full-length fenders give the best coverage but need mounting points (frame and fork eyelets, fork crown hole, and rear bridge); clip-on and quick-release fenders work on bikes without eyelets but cover less.

On an e-bike, check clearance for the rear hub motor cable, the rack, and any integrated taillight, and make sure the stays do not interfere with the disc caliper. Confirm your wheel size, tire width and mounting points on your bike before ordering. If you run a rear rack, many fenders mount to the rack itself, which avoids stay conflicts and keeps the fender stable on a heavy bike.

20x4 Fat Tire Fender Set, Front and Rear (generic)

Fat folding e-bikes throw an impressive rooster tail, and many ship without fenders or with flimsy ones that crack. Generic 20x4 fender sets are wide plastic or alloy mudguards with stays sized for 20-inch wheels and roughly 4-inch tires, sold as a front and rear pair. Fit varies because fork crown and frame bridge designs differ between brands; sets made for a specific model (Lectric, Heybike, etc.) fit better than universal ones. Expect to bend stays and drill a hole or two. Measure your tire width and check the fender is at least 4.5 inches wide.

Best for: 20x4 fat folders that came without fenders · Replacing cracked stock fenders · Rainy-season commuters

26x4 Fat Tire Fender Set, Front and Rear (generic)

Full-size fat e-bikes on 26x4 tires need fenders at least 4.5 inches wide, and the sets sold for them are wide alloy or plastic guards with adjustable stays and, usually, a bracket for a rack tail light. Universal sets fit most rigid and hardtail fat bikes with eyelets, but suspension forks and frames without eyelets need clamp-style stays or a model-specific set. Alloy fenders rattle less and survive better than plastic. Installation takes an hour the first time; take the time to set stays so the fender does not rub the tire under load.

Best for: 26x4 fat e-bikes ridden in rain or mud · Commuters who want full coverage rather than clip-on guards · Replacing worn or bent OEM fenders

SKS Bluemels 65 U Full Fender Set (26/27.5/29-inch)

SKS Bluemels are the classic full-coverage commuter fender, and the wide 65 mm U version is the one sized for modern hybrid and e-bike tires on 26, 27.5 and 29-inch wheels. They use SKS's secure stay clips that release in a jam, the plastic is durable and quiet, and the coverage is long enough to keep the spray off your feet and the back of your jacket. They need eyelets at the dropouts and a crown mount; bikes without them need the clip-on version. Fit is straightforward on a rigid frame and more involved with suspension.

Best for: 27.5 and 29-inch commuter e-bikes with eyelets · Riders who want proper full coverage · Replacing rattly generic fenders

How to choose fenders

Wheel size

Fender curvature must match the wheel diameter; a 26-inch fender on a 20-inch wheel will not follow the tire.

Width

Fender width should exceed tire width by 10 to 20mm. Fat tires need fat-tire specific fenders.

Mount style

Full-length with stays for bikes with eyelets; clip-on or strap-on for bikes without. Check for a fork crown hole and a rear bridge.

Clearance

Confirm room for the motor cable, disc caliper, rack and any lights.

Material and stiffness

Rigid plastic or alloy fenders rattle less than thin flexible ones; look for adjustable stays and safety-release front mounts.

Compatibility notes

  • Wheel diameter and tire width must both match; confirm on your bike by reading the tire sidewall.
  • Full-length fenders need frame and fork mounting points; check before buying.
  • On hub-motor bikes, confirm the rear fender stays clear the motor cable and torque arm.

Installation considerations

  • Mount the fender with an even gap to the tire all the way around, adjusting stay length before final tightening.
  • Route the rear fender stay around the motor cable and torque arm without pinching the cable.
  • Check the front fender does not interfere with the steering lock or a front light.
  • Spin both wheels and listen for rub before riding.

Maintenance tips

  • Retighten stay bolts after the first few rides; fenders loosen with vibration.
  • Clean mud buildup inside the fender; it adds weight and rubs the tire.
  • Replace cracked fenders before they fold into the wheel.

Frequently asked questions

What size fender do I need for a 20x4 fat tire?

A 20-inch fat-tire fender around 100 to 120mm wide. Standard 20-inch fenders are far too narrow.

Can I put full fenders on a bike without eyelets?

Sometimes with P-clamps or adapters, but clip-on or strap fenders are easier and still cover most spray.

Why does my fender rattle?

Loose stays, a thin flexible fender, or contact with a cable. Tighten, add a rubber washer, or re-route the offending cable.

Do fenders interfere with disc brakes?

They should not if the stays are routed around the caliper; some fenders include offset stays for disc bikes.

Do I need fenders in Texas?

Rain is infrequent but heavy, and fenders also keep grit off the chain and motor cable. For a commuter, they are worth it.
