Chains on e-bikes wear faster than on regular bikes because motor torque, especially from a mid-drive, runs through the chain constantly, and riders tend to shift under load. A worn chain does not just skip; it wears the cassette and chainring to match it, turning a cheap replacement into an expensive one. Checking chain wear and replacing on time is the single most cost-effective piece of e-bike maintenance. On a hub-drive bike the chain mostly carries your own pedaling, but the higher cruising speeds still mean more revolutions and more wear per mile than a regular bike.

Chains are sized by speed count, which sets their width: 6, 7 and 8 speed chains share one width, 9 is narrower, then 10, 11 and 12 get progressively narrower. Match your cassette or freewheel's speed count. Beyond that, e-bike rated chains (several makers sell them) use harder pins and thicker plates to survive motor torque; they are worth it on mid-drives and for heavier riders, and harmless on hub-drive bikes. Length is set by matching your old chain link for link, or by the big-big plus two method on a derailleur bike.

Quick links make installation toolless but are speed-specific and, on 11 and 12 speed, often single-use. Keep a spare on the bike. And remember the chain is part of a system: a new chain on a worn cassette will skip, so check the cogs when you replace it. Confirm your speed count on your bike before buying. A spare quick link and a small chain tool in the bag turn a broken chain from a walk home into a five-minute stop.

KMC e8 E-Bike Chain (8-Speed)

KMC's e-series chains are built for the extra torque a mid-drive motor puts through the drivetrain, with thicker, stronger plates and pins than a standard chain of the same speed. The e8 is the 8-speed version and also works on most 7-speed systems with 7-speed cog spacing. If you have a Bafang BBS02, BBSHD or a production mid-drive bike (Bosch, Shimano STEPS, Bafang M-series) with an 8-speed cassette, this is the chain to buy when the old one measures worn. It will not make a hub-motor bike faster, but it will not hurt either.

KMC Z7 Chain (6/7/8-Speed)

The KMC Z7 (formerly labeled Z51) is the standard replacement chain for 6-, 7- and 8-speed drivetrains, which covers most hub-motor e-bikes. It is an inexpensive chain that includes a reusable quick link, so installation needs only a chain breaker to size it. On an e-bike the chain carries only your pedaling load with a hub motor, so a basic chain like this lasts well; with a mid-drive you should step up to an e-bike-rated chain. Measure your old chain for length and replace the freewheel if the old chain was badly worn.

How to choose e-bike chains

Speed count

Match the number of cogs on your cassette or freewheel. 6 to 8 speed chains are interchangeable with each other; 9, 10, 11 and 12 speed each need their own.

E-bike rating

E-bike specific chains resist stretch and plate wear under motor torque. Strongly recommended on mid-drives.

Length

Buy a chain with at least as many links as your old one; most come long and are cut to fit.

Make sure a matching quick link is included and buy a spare. Some are reusable, many are not.

Finish

How do I know what speed chain I need?

Do I need an e-bike specific chain?

On a mid-drive, yes, it will last noticeably longer. On a hub-drive bike a quality standard chain is fine, but the e-bike rated version does no harm.

How often should I replace an e-bike chain?
