Suspension and rigid posts — check diameter (27.2, 30.9, 31.6 mm).

A suspension seatpost is one of the most effective comfort upgrades on an e-bike without rear suspension, and a plain replacement post is the fix when a stock post bends, slips or seizes. Either way, the diameter has to be right, and there are more diameters in use than most riders expect. Rigid replacement posts also let you set the right length for your height, and droppers show up on trail e-bikes. On a bike with fat tires and no suspension, the post is doing a lot of the work your wrists and spine would otherwise absorb.

Measure your current post with calipers or read the size printed near the bottom; common diameters are 27.2, 30.9 and 31.6mm, with 25.4, 28.6, 30.4 and 33.9mm and others on certain bikes, especially fat and step-through frames. If the only post available is too small, a shim can adapt it; a post too large will not fit and should not be forced. Note the minimum insertion line and make sure the new post is long enough to clear it at your saddle height.

For suspension posts, choose between telescoping and parallelogram designs; parallelogram posts move the saddle back and down and tend to feel more natural, while telescoping posts are simpler and cheaper. Preload adjustment and a weight rating that covers you matter. Confirm your diameter on your bike before ordering. Heavier riders should look for posts with a firm spring option or adjustable preload range; a post tuned for a light rider bottoms out and feels worse than a rigid one.

Spring Suspension Seatpost, 31.6 mm x 350 mm (generic)

The basic telescoping suspension seatpost is the budget answer to a harsh ride: an alloy post with an internal coil spring and a bit of damping, usually with a preload adjuster at the bottom. It does not move as smoothly as a parallelogram post and can develop side play, but it costs a fraction as much and does take the sting out of potholes. These are sold in many diameters; 31.6 x 350 mm is common on fat and commuter e-bikes, and 27.2 mm is common on older frames. Measure your existing post with calipers, not a ruler.

How to choose seat posts

Diameter

Measure with calipers or read the printed size. Use a shim only to go from a smaller post to a larger seat tube, never the reverse.

Length and minimum insertion

Enough length to reach your saddle height with the minimum insertion line inside the frame; suspension posts need a bit more room.

Suspension design

Parallelogram for the most natural feel; telescoping for simplicity and price. Check travel and preload range.

Weight rating

Choose a post rated above your weight with gear; a soft spring bottoms out and a hard one does nothing.

Clamp type

Standard 7mm rail clamp for most saddles; confirm if your saddle has oval rails.

Compatibility notes

  • Post diameter must match the seat tube exactly or be shimmed up; confirm on your bike by measuring.
  • Dropper posts need cable routing and a lever; confirm frame compatibility.
  • Minimum insertion must be met; a post too short for your height is unsafe.

Installation considerations

  • Clean the seat tube, apply grease (or carbon paste for carbon parts), insert to at least the minimum line, and torque the collar to spec.
  • Set saddle height and check the post does not slip under load; tighten slightly or use a shim if it does.
  • On suspension posts, set preload for your weight per the instructions.

Maintenance tips

  • Pull, clean and regrease the post once or twice a year to prevent seizing.
  • Check collar torque if the post creaks or slips.
