Thread-on freewheels common on hub-motor e-bikes (often 7-speed).
Most hub-motor e-bikes use a thread-on freewheel rather than a cassette. It screws onto the motor's threaded shell, usually with a 7-speed cluster, and it does two jobs: it carries the cogs and it contains the ratchet that lets you coast. When a freewheel wears or the ratchet gets gritty, you get skipping, a grinding sound when coasting, or pedals that do not catch immediately. Replacement is cheap and, with the right tool, a ten-minute job.
Identify it first: a freewheel has no separate lockring, and the entire cluster unthreads from the hub counterclockwise using a splined remover that fits inside the center. Removal tools differ between brands, so match the tool to the freewheel you are removing. Most hub motors use the standard freewheel thread, and 7-speed is the common size, with 14-28 or 14-34 tooth ranges on stock bikes and wider-range options (for example 11-32) sold as upgrades. Tooth counts are stamped on the cogs, so a quick look tells you what range you have now.
Width is the catch. Hub motors have limited space between the freewheel and the frame dropout, and an 8 or 9 speed freewheel is wider than a 7 and may not clear the chainstay or may shift the chainline. Stick with your current speed count unless the motor maker says otherwise. A new freewheel needs the same speed chain; confirm your speed count and thread type on your bike before ordering. If you also want easier pedaling at higher speeds, an 11-tooth small cog is the practical upgrade inside the 7-speed format; a motor-clearance check with the seller is still wise.
