E-Bike Won't Accelerate

  • Display turns on but the motor does nothing with throttle or pedaling
  • Motor hums or twitches but the bike does not move
  • Bike accelerates weakly, then gives up
  • Bike is stuck in a very low speed limit or walk mode
  • An error code appears when you try to go

A bike that powers up but will not drive is usually being told not to. The controller sits there waiting for permission from the brake sensors, a throttle or PAS signal, and a speed reading, and if any of those is wrong it will not send power. Brake cutoff switches stuck on, assist set to zero, a walk-assist mode engaged, or a disconnected sensor are the usual culprits. Less often it is the motor connection, a controller fault, or a battery that powers the display but sags under load.

A motor that hums, shudders, or rocks back and forth without driving is a different animal — that is a hall sensor or phase problem and belongs with a professional. Everything else on this list is safe to check at home with the battery out.

Safety first

Never open a battery pack. Stop immediately if you see swelling, smell burning, or feel heat at the battery or connectors. Do not cut or splice wires. Unplug the battery before touching connectors. When in doubt, stop and get an E-Bike Assessment.

Possible causes

  1. Cause 1

    Brake cutoff sensor stuck on

    When a brake lever switch stays triggered, the controller refuses all power. Levers that do not fully return, sensor magnets that shifted, and moisture in the sensor plug cause it. Many displays show a brake icon when this is happening.

    Safe checks

    • Check both levers return fully to rest; look for a brake icon on the display with hands off the bars.
    • Battery out: unplug one brake sensor, battery in, test with the rear wheel off the ground. Repeat for the other. If power returns, that sensor is the cause. Reconnect before riding.

  2. Cause 2

    Assist level at zero, walk mode, or a speed limit setting

    PAS 0 disables pedal assist and, on many bikes, the throttle. Walk-assist mode holds the bike to about 3–4 mph. A speed limit or wheel size setting that was changed in the display menu can cap the bike at a crawl. All of these are settings, not faults.

    Safe checks

    • Press + to raise assist to 1 or higher and try again.
    • Make sure walk mode (usually holding – or a dedicated button) is not engaged.
    • Open the display settings and check speed limit and wheel size against the manual's defaults.

  3. Cause 3

    Pedal assist sensor not sending a signal

    On a cadence bike the controller watches a magnet disc next to the crank; if the disc is loose, spaced too far from the sensor, or the connector is out, pedaling does nothing. On a torque sensor bike, a loose or unplugged sensor does the same. If the throttle works but pedaling does not, this is where to look.

    Safe checks

    • Look at the crank-side magnet disc: it should spin with the crank, sit flat, and pass within a couple of millimeters of the sensor.
    • Battery out: check the PAS sensor connector near the bottom bracket for alignment and corrosion.
    • Test the throttle separately — throttle working while PAS does not isolates the PAS side.

  4. Cause 4

    Throttle signal missing or stuck

    A throttle that is stuck slightly open at power-on makes the controller disable it as a safety measure; a disconnected throttle does nothing; a shorted throttle can disable PAS as well on some controllers. See the throttle page for the full list.

    Safe checks

    • Power off, let the throttle rest, power on, retest.
    • Battery out: check the throttle connector. If PAS returns with the throttle unplugged, the throttle is faulty.

  5. Cause 5

    Battery sags under load even though the display is on

    A display draws almost nothing; a motor draws a lot. A pack that is nearly empty, very cold, or has a weak cell group can light the display and then collapse the moment the motor tries to pull current — the bike lurches, the display may reboot, and then nothing. Charge state and resting voltage tell you.

    Safe checks

    • Charge fully and retest.
    • Measure resting pack voltage; compare to the normal range for your system voltage.
    • Watch the display when you try to go — a reboot or sudden bar drop means the pack is sagging.

  6. Cause 6

    Motor connector, hall sensor or phase fault

    If the motor hums, twitches, growls, or rocks without turning, the controller is sending power but the motor is not responding correctly. That is a hall sensor, phase wire, or controller output problem, sometimes just a loose motor connector near the dropout. Inspect the connector with the battery out; leave testing to a professional.

    Safe checks

    • Battery out: inspect the motor cable from the axle to its connector for damage, and confirm the connector is fully mated and its collar tight.
    • Note any error code and any noise from the motor.
    • Do not probe phase wires or power the bike with the motor connector open.

Safe basic checks, in order

    Raise assist and cancel walk mode

    Set PAS to 1 or higher, make sure walk-assist is not active, and check the speed limit setting.

    Check brake levers and cutoff icon

    Full return on both levers; no brake icon at rest.

    Isolate brake sensors

    Battery out, unplug one sensor, battery in, test with rear wheel lifted. Repeat. Reconnect before riding.

    Test throttle and pedal assist separately

    Which one works tells you which sensor path to inspect.

    Check the PAS disc and sensor gap

    Disc tight to the crank, a few millimeters from the sensor, connector clean.

    Full charge and voltage check

    Charge to 100%; measure resting voltage; watch for display reboot under load.

    Inspect the motor connector

    Battery out. Cable intact, connector fully mated. Note any hum or error code.

When to stop troubleshooting

  • The motor hums, shudders, rocks back and forth, or grinds — that is a hall or phase fault; do not keep trying.
  • A persistent motor, hall, phase, or controller error code appears.
  • Any connector or the controller shows heat damage or smells burnt.
  • The battery sags to a display reboot even at full charge.

Why does the bike lurch once and then die?

The battery is collapsing under load — it has enough to light the display but not to drive the motor. Charge fully and retest; if it persists at full charge, the pack has a weak cell group.

Is it the controller?

Controllers do fail, but they are the last thing to blame. Rule out settings, brake sensors, PAS and throttle signals, the battery under load, and the motor connector first. A shop can test controller outputs safely.
