E-Bike Motor Cuts Out

The pattern of the cut — on hills, over bumps, after heat, when braking — tells you which.

Start by noticing the pattern, because it narrows the field fast. Cuts under load with a low battery are sag. Cuts on rough pavement are contacts. Cuts after long climbs in July are heat.     Slide-in packs that have loosened in their cradle, worn spring contacts, or a main discharge connector (XT60/XT90 or Anderson) that is not fully mated will disconnect for a fraction of a second when the bike hits a bump. The display usually goes blank and reboots. This is the most common 'cuts over bumps' cause.

    Hub motors and controllers shut down or derate when hot — long climbs, heavy loads, a 100°F afternoon, or a motor that is being lugged in too high a gear. The cut lasts until things cool. Controllers mounted inside sealed frames with no airflow are most prone.

    • Feel the motor hub and controller area after a cut (carefully — they can be hot enough to burn). Warm is normal; too hot to touch is thermal territory.
    • Note whether cuts happen only after 15–20 minutes of hard riding or on long climbs.

    Speed sensor or magnet out of alignment

    On many hub-motor and mid-drive bikes the controller needs a wheel speed signal; when the spoke magnet drifts away from the sensor, the controller cuts power (often with an error code) and may think the bike is stationary. The magnet gets knocked on a tire change or by a stick.

    • Find the spoke magnet and the sensor on the chainstay or fork; the gap should be a few millimeters with the magnet passing directly over the sensor.

    Motor phase or hall connector, or a controller fault

    The motor's thick phase wires and its thin hall-sensor bundle run through one big connector near the rear dropout. Damage there causes jerky running, grinding, and cuts under load, often with a hall or motor error code. This is where safe checks end: inspect, but leave testing of phase and hall circuits to a professional.
