On most e-bikes the display is the power switch, the settings menu and the fault reporter, so when it acts up the whole bike seems broken. But a display is at the end of a chain: battery, controller, harness, connector, then screen. A blank display is usually a power problem upstream; a display that lights up and shows a code is actually working and reporting a problem somewhere else.
Treat a blank screen and an error code as two different jobs. For a blank screen, follow the power path from the battery forward. For an error code, write the code down and look it up for your brand — the same number means different things on Bafang, KT, Lishui and proprietary systems — then check the part it points to. Either way, nothing here requires opening the display or cutting wires.
Safety first
Never open a battery pack. Stop immediately if you see swelling, smell burning, or feel heat at the battery or connectors. Do not cut or splice wires. Unplug the battery before touching connectors. When in doubt, stop and get an E-Bike Assessment.
Cause 1
If the battery is off, asleep, empty, unseated, or its fuse is blown, the display has nothing to turn on with. This is by far the most common blank-display cause and has nothing to do with the display.

Cause 2
The display plugs into the harness with a waterproof multi-pin connector, often right at the stem. If the collar is loose, a pin is pushed back, or water got in, the display gets no power or no data. Rotating the bars, folding the bike, or a crash commonly disturbs it.

Cause 3
Displays are splash-resistant, not submersible. Pressure washing, a bike left out in a Texas thunderstorm, or riding through deep water can put moisture behind the screen. Fogging, dead segments and phantom button presses follow. Sometimes it dries out; sometimes the board is corroded.

Cause 4
A display showing a code is doing its job. Common categories are brake cutoff active, throttle fault, motor hall fault, controller overcurrent or overvoltage, communication error, and speed sensor. The number is brand-specific — look it up for your exact system and then check the part it names, starting with its connector.

Cause 5
Rubber-membrane buttons wear through and stop registering, or stick down after grit and sun. A stuck button can put the display into a menu, lock it, or prevent power-on. A display whose power button has a soft spot or no click is worn.

Cause 6
Displays do fail: backlight out, cracked board, or a communication chip that stops talking to the controller. They are also paired to a protocol (UART or CAN, and a specific brand), so a replacement must match your controller exactly — a generic display off a shelf will usually not work. If the battery is healthy, connectors are clean and dry, and the screen still stays dark, it is time for a professional to confirm display vs controller.

Confirm battery power
Charge, key on, pack button held, pack reseated. A blank screen with a dead battery is not a display problem.
Long-press power
Hold the display power button 2–3 seconds; some require it.
Inspect the display connector
Battery out, unscrew the collar, check pins and moisture, realign and retighten.
Check the display cable
Follow it from the display into the harness looking for crush, cut or pinch points.
Dry it out
If wet, battery out and 24–48 hours indoors before retesting.
Write down any error code
Exact code and trigger. Look it up for your specific brand and system.
Check the part the code names

Only if it uses the same communication protocol and is supported by your controller. Displays and controllers are paired (UART vs CAN, brand-specific firmware). Match the exact model or use one your controller maker lists as compatible.
Codes are brand-specific. On one system 21 is a current fault, on another it is a speed sensor. Look up your exact display and controller brand rather than a generic chart, then check the named part's connector first.

On many bikes the display is the on switch, so a dead display means no motor. If the motor does run, you lose battery level and speed information. Fine for a short trip; not a long-term plan.
Cover the bike when stored outside, never pressure wash the cockpit, and make sure the display connector's collar is fully tight. A small bag over the display on a rainy day helps more than you would think.
Only order once you have confirmed the cause — mismatched electrical parts can damage a controller or battery.
