Basic DMMs for checking battery, charger and connector voltages safely.
A basic multimeter answers the most common e-bike questions in seconds: is the battery actually charged, is the charger putting out voltage, is this connector passing power. It turns a dead bike from a mystery into a short list of suspects, and most of what an owner will ever measure is simple DC voltage at exposed terminals. You do not need an expensive meter, but you do need one that reads DC voltage accurately across the ranges e-bikes use and that is built safely.
E-bike systems are nominally 36, 48 or 52 volts, which means a full battery reads about 42, 54.6 or 58.8 volts respectively, and a charger's output sits at those same figures. Any meter with a DC voltage range to at least 200 volts covers that with room to spare; auto-ranging meters remove a step. Look for a CAT II or CAT III rating and proper shrouded probes; a cheap uncertified meter is a fire risk if you ever measure a wall socket by mistake. Continuity with a beep, resistance, and a DC current range up to 10 amps are useful extras, though measuring current on an e-bike is rarely necessary and easy to get wrong.
Safety is about what you measure, not just the meter. Probing the battery's output terminals, the charger plug, or a discharge port is fine with care; opening a battery pack, probing inside its case, or poking at the BMS is not, ever. Keep probe tips from bridging adjacent pins, use one hand where possible, and do not test a battery that is swollen, hot or smells burnt.
