The fix is cheap and mostly habit. Bring the battery inside, charge it when it is cool, and do not leave it in a vehicle. How hot it actually gets where bikes live
Dallas-area summer afternoon highs sit in the mid to upper 90s for weeks and cross 100 degrees most years, sometimes for long stretches. An attached garage without climate control tracks a few degrees behind outside in the afternoon and then holds heat into the night, so 105 to 115 degrees inside a closed garage is routine. A detached metal shed is worse. A car parked in the sun can pass 140 degrees inside within an hour.
Most battery makers list a storage range that tops out around 95 to 113 degrees and a charging range that tops out lower, often around 104. A North Texas garage exceeds both on an ordinary July afternoon. A pack that sits there all summer, every summer, will lose capacity noticeably faster than one kept at 75 degrees indoors. That is the whole problem in one paragraph.
Storage: bring it inside
Most e-bike batteries detach with a key in a few seconds. Make it a habit from roughly May through September to take the battery off when you get home and keep it in a climate-controlled room. A closet, a utility room or a corner of the garage that is air conditioned all work. Keep it away from anything flammable, off carpet if it is charging, and out of direct sun through a window.
If the battery cannot be removed easily, as on some integrated frames, move the whole bike indoors if you can, or at minimum keep the garage as cool as practical and avoid charging in the heat of the day. Never leave a battery in a vehicle. That includes transporting the bike on a hitch rack in the sun for hours and leaving a spare pack in the trunk at the trailhead. If you must drive to a ride, take the battery inside the cabin with the air conditioning, and do not leave it in the parked car.
Charging in summer
Charging generates heat and most chargers do not stop for a hot battery, so charging a pack that just came off a 100-degree ride in a 110-degree garage is the worst case. Let the pack cool for an hour or so, ideally indoors, before plugging in. Charge indoors where the ambient temperature is reasonable, on a hard surface, where you can see it, and unplug when done. Slower charging, at the stock 2A rather than a fast 5A, generates less heat and is a good summer default.
A charger that runs warm is normal; one that is too hot to hold is not. If a charger or a battery gets unusually hot, stops charging early, or the fan runs constantly, stop and let things cool before trying again. Never charge a battery that is hot to the touch when it has not been used; that is a warning sign, not a state to fix with a charger.

Riding in the heat: range and behavior
Heat does not cut a battery's capacity much in the moment, so a hot-day range drop usually comes from you rather than the pack: you ride at higher assist to avoid sweating, you use the throttle more, and the afternoon south wind is often stronger. That is fine; the assist is there to be used. Just plan for 20 to 30 percent less range on a 100-degree afternoon than on a cool morning, and carry water.
Some bikes reduce power or shut down when the battery or controller exceeds a temperature threshold. If your bike gets sluggish or cuts out on a long hot climb or after sustained throttle use, overheating protection is one possibility among several; let it rest in the shade and see if it recovers. Warning signs that mean stop
Heat-stressed batteries can fail safely or unsafely. Stop using a pack and move it outdoors away from structures if the case is swollen or bulging, if it is warm or hot when it has not been used or charged, if it hisses, smells of solvent or shows any discoloration, or if it has been submerged or dropped hard. Do not charge it and do not open it. Contact the manufacturer or a battery recycler about disposal; these do not go in household trash.
