Replacement chargers are the most searched-for e-bike part and the easiest one to get wrong. The problem is that the bike's nominal voltage (36V, 48V, 52V) is not the number printed on the charger; the charger is labeled with its full-charge output (42.0V, 54.6V, 58.8V), and the plugs look alike across voltages. Buy by the box label and you can end up with a brick that will not charge the pack, leaves it chronically undercharged, or in the worst case overcharges it.
This guide is less about brands, because most replacement chargers sold online are generic, and more about reading your old charger and battery correctly so you order the right spec sheet. The picks below are the four combinations of voltage and plug that cover the large majority of hub-motor commuter bikes, folding bikes and kit builds. If your charger has a proprietary plug (Bosch, Shimano, Specialized, Rad Power's newer packs and others), go through the manufacturer.

Match the voltage: 36V to 42.0V, 48V to 54.6V, 52V to 58.8V
Lithium-ion e-bike packs are built from cells in series, and each cell charges to 4.2V. A 36V pack has 10 in series (42.0V full), a 48V pack has 13 (54.6V full), a 52V pack has 14 (58.8V full). The charger is labeled with that full-charge number, not the nominal one. So the first thing to do is find the output line on your old charger, which reads something like OUTPUT 54.6V 2A, and match it exactly. If the old charger is gone, the battery label or the manufacturer's spec page will tell you the nominal voltage, and you convert from there.
Close is not good enough. A 54.6V charger on a 52V pack will stop at about 90 percent every time and the bike will seem to have lost range. A 58.8V charger on a 48V pack pushes cells past their limit; the BMS should cut it off, but you are relying on a safety circuit to save you from a buying mistake. Amperage: how fast, and how fast is safe
Amps set the charge speed. A 2A charger fills a 13Ah pack in roughly 6 to 7 hours from empty; a 3A charger does it in 4 to 5; a 5A charger in under 3. Higher amperage is fine as long as the battery's BMS is rated for it, and most packs sold with hub-motor bikes accept 3A or more. It is always safe to use a lower amperage than the original; it is only slower.
For daily use, slower is kinder. Lithium cells run cooler and age more slowly at 2A, and overnight charging makes the speed irrelevant. Buy a higher-amp charger as a second unit for the days you need a quick top-up, not as a replacement for nightly charging, and place any charger on a hard surface with airflow; these bricks get warm and many have fans.
Plug type and polarity
The three common charge-port fittings are DC barrel plugs (5.5x2.1 mm and 5.5x2.5 mm are the usual two, and they are not interchangeable despite looking identical), 3-pin XLR on many Hailong and rack packs, and proprietary connectors on brand-name systems. Measure the pin on your old plug or test-fit before ordering, and look for a listing that states the barrel size clearly. On XLR, pin assignment varies by seller, so compare the charger's published pin-out to the battery's.
Polarity matters on barrel plugs: center-positive is usual but not universal. If you have a multimeter, set it to DC volts and touch the probes to the plug; a correct charger reads its rated output with the center pin positive. That same check confirms a suspect charger is actually putting out voltage, which is the fastest way to tell a dead charger from a dead battery.
When the charger is not the problem
A charger light that stays green, a pack that reads full but dies in a mile, or a bike that will not charge even with a known-good charger all point past the charger to the battery, the charge port or the BMS. Buy from a seller that shows safety markings and a clear spec table, keep the old charger's label photo on your phone, and when the new unit arrives, confirm the output with a multimeter before the first plug-in. That five-minute habit prevents most of the charger horror stories we hear.
Alternatives and who should skip this category
If your bike uses a proprietary system such as Bosch, Shimano STEPS, Yamaha, Specialized or a newer Rad Power pack, skip generic chargers entirely and order from the manufacturer or a dealer; the connectors and communication protocols are not something a generic brick replicates.
