Bags

Frame, handlebar and trunk bags for tools, chargers and essentials.

E-bike owners carry more than pedal-bike riders do. A spare tube and a multi-tool are standard, but many of us also want the charger along for a long day, a U-lock that weighs three pounds, and a phone and keys that stay put. Bags sort that out without a backpack sweating into your shirt in July. The trick is that e-bike frames are not shaped like traditional frames: down-tube batteries, step-through designs, and controller boxes eat up the triangle that a normal frame bag would use.

Top-tube bags, sometimes called bento or gas-tank bags, sit behind the stem and are perfect for a phone, wallet and snacks. Handlebar bags add volume up front but compete with the display, lights and a phone mount; check they do not block the headlight. Small frame bags can fit above an integrated battery on some bikes, and are a good home for tools. Trunk bags ride on top of a rear rack and are where a charger, lock and rain jacket usually live; some expand into small panniers.

Weather resistance matters more than people expect here. North Texas storms arrive fast, and a charger soaked in a cheap nylon bag is an expensive lesson. Roll-top or welded bags with sealed zippers keep things dry; otherwise use a dry bag inside. Also watch the mounting straps: velcro around a frame with cables running along it will eventually rub through cable jackets, so pad them or route the straps to avoid the wiring. A strip of clear frame-protection tape under each strap is cheap insurance, and it also stops the bag from creeping on rough pavement.

ROCKBROS Top Tube Bag with Phone Window

A top tube bag is the cheapest way to carry keys, a wallet and a phone without a backpack, and ROCKBROS makes the most common version: a strap-on pouch with a touch-screen window on top and a small cable port. On e-bikes with a battery in the downtube, the top tube is often the only free frame real estate. Waterproofing is 'resistant', the window dims touch sensitivity, and a larger phone may not fit, so check the listed dimensions. It is a cheap, useful bag, not a premium one. For a charger you will still want a trunk bag or pannier.

Best for: Riders who want a no-backpack commute · Keys, wallet and snack storage · Step-through and folding e-bikes with limited frame space

Topeak MTX TrunkBag DXP

The MTX TrunkBag DXP is the classic commuter trunk bag: it slides onto a Topeak MTX QuickTrack rack and locks with a click, then fold-down side panels drop into small panniers when groceries run over. It has a bottle holder, reflective trim and a rain cover. The catch is the rack: you need a Topeak MTX-compatible rack or adapter plate for the slide-on mount. For e-bikes with a stock rack, Topeak sells adapter plates, but measure first. It is a very convenient system for the charger-and-lunch crowd because you can pull the whole bag off and carry it inside.

Best for: Commuters carrying a charger, lunch and a layer · Quick grocery runs · Riders who want a bag that clips on and off in seconds

How to choose bags

Fit around the frame and battery

Measure the space available after the battery and cables. Step-through frames often cannot take a triangle frame bag at all. Top-tube and trunk bags are the safest bets for most e-bikes.

Mounting that does not rub

Straps should be padded or positioned away from exposed cable runs. Bolt-on top-tube bags that use frame bosses are cleaner where the bike has them. Rack-mounted trunk bags should clamp or strap securely so they do not creep on bumps.

Weather protection

Look for welded seams, water-resistant zippers or roll tops, and a stiff base so the bag does not sag into the wheel. If the bag is not truly waterproof, add a dry bag or zip bag for electronics.

Access while riding

Top-tube and some handlebar bags can be opened safely on a trail. Anything requiring two hands or reaching behind you should only be accessed when stopped, especially with a throttle.

Capacity and stability

Match capacity to what you actually carry. A heavy charger and lock belong low and central or on the rack, not in a handlebar bag that upsets steering on a heavy bike.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I carry my e-bike charger?

On the rack in a trunk bag or pannier, ideally inside a dry bag. Chargers are heavy enough to affect steering in a handlebar bag, and they should be kept away from moisture and heat.

Will a frame bag fit my e-bike?

It depends on the frame. Bikes with external down-tube batteries or step-through frames rarely have room for a traditional triangle bag. Small half-frame bags sometimes fit above an integrated battery. Measure before buying.

Are handlebar bags a problem with the display and lights?

They can be. A tall bag can block the headlight beam or crowd the display. Choose a low-profile bag or one that mounts off a bracket that holds it forward and below the bar.

How do I keep straps from wearing through the frame and cables?

Apply clear protective tape or a section of old tube under strap contact points, keep straps tight so they do not move, and avoid running them over exposed wires or brake hoses.
