Riding Gear

Jackets, rain gear and pads suited to faster e-bike riding.

You do not need a cycling wardrobe to ride an e-bike; most people ride in regular clothes, which is part of the appeal. But a few pieces of gear make faster riding safer and more comfortable, and the choices differ from pedal-bike apparel because you are moving quicker with less effort. At 25 mph, wind chill is real even on a mild day, rain hits like it does on a scooter, and a fall happens at speeds where a bit of protection matters.

A packable wind and rain shell is the most useful item. Look for one that breathes, has a long tail to cover the gap an upright posture opens at the back, and fits over a helmet hood or has a high collar. Bright color and reflective details do double duty. In summer, a light, loose, sun-protective long sleeve is cooler than bare arms at speed and keeps sun off. For anyone riding trails, a throttle bike at Class 3 speeds, or a scooter-style bike, lightweight knee and elbow pads or a jacket with armor are worth considering; the faster and heavier the bike, the more sense they make.

Avoid anything loose enough to catch in a wheel, chain or pedal, and check that jacket hems and straps clear the saddle and rack. Pockets that zip keep keys and phones from bouncing out. Most of all, pick things you will wear in August and pull on for a quick errand; gear that lives in the closet does nothing on the road.

Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite2 Rain Suit

The Ultra-Lite2 is a packable jacket-and-pants set made of a non-woven material that is genuinely waterproof and cheap. It is the rain gear to stash in a pannier and forget until a storm catches you on the way home. It is not cut for cycling, so the jacket flaps and the pants can catch on a saddle, and the fabric tears if you snag it on a pedal or a rack. Breathability is poor, so on a warm day you sweat inside. None of that matters much when it is a surprise downpour and you are ten miles from home.

Best for: Emergency rain gear in the bag · Budget commuters · Occasional wet rides

Showers Pass Transit CC Waterproof Jacket

Showers Pass builds rain gear for people who commute year-round in Portland, which means it is overbuilt for Frisco but very welcome on the few weeks it matters. The Transit CC is a waterproof, breathable commuter jacket with a casual cut, reflective details, pit zips and a cut that works on an upright e-bike. Because e-bikes ride faster with less effort, you run cooler and get more wind chill, so a true waterproof shell makes more sense than on a regular bike. It is expensive and too warm for summer storms; in summer you get wet and dry off.

Best for: Year-round commuters · Cool, wet mornings · Riders who want a jacket that does not look like race kit

How to choose riding gear

Wind and rain protection

A packable shell with a dropped tail, high collar and breathable fabric covers most weather. Fully waterproof shells are hot; water-resistant and breathable is often the better daily choice here.

Breathability for heat

Texas summers call for light, vented, sun-protective fabrics. Loose fits cool better but should not flap into the wheel or chain.

Protection level

Slim knee and elbow pads or a jacket with removable armor suit faster or off-road riding. Check certification for the pads and that they stay put while pedaling.

Visibility

Bright colors and reflective accents on the back and sleeves help drivers see you. They complement lights and reflective equipment.

Fit on the bike

Try gear in the riding position: sleeves should reach the wrists with arms forward, hems should not ride up, and nothing should touch the rear wheel or saddle.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need special clothing to ride an e-bike?

No. Most riders wear normal clothes. A packable shell, a helmet, gloves and visible details cover most needs. Pads and armored jackets make sense for faster or off-road riding.

What is the best rain gear for an e-bike commute?

A breathable shell with a long tail, plus fenders on the bike. Waterproof shoe covers or quick-dry shoes help more than rain pants for short commutes. Keep the shell in a pannier so it is always with you.

Are knee and elbow pads overkill?

For relaxed neighborhood riding, usually. For Class 3 speeds, trails, or throttle bikes ridden aggressively, slim pads are a reasonable middle ground between nothing and motorcycle gear.

How do I stay cool in summer?

Ride early or late, wear light sun-protective long sleeves, use the motor more and pedal less on the hottest days, and carry water. A vented helmet and mesh gloves help too.
