Lights make you visible; reflectives make you recognizable. A driver's headlights light up reflective material at distances well beyond where a small taillight registers, and moving reflectives on ankles and pedals read as a cyclist in a way a static dot does not. For e-bike riders who travel faster and mix with traffic on roads like FM 423 or Custer, a few well-placed reflective items are the cheapest safety upgrade available.

Location matters more than quantity. Ankle bands and reflective pedals or cranks move in a distinctive pattern that drivers identify instantly. Reflective strips on the rear of the bike, on a rack or fender, and on the back of a helmet are in the driver's line of sight. Vests and sashes work but are hot, so in summer a lightweight reflective sash or a few strips on a jersey may be used more consistently than a heavy vest. Reflective tape on rims, fork legs and frame adds side visibility at intersections, which is where many collisions happen.

Look for real retroreflective material, usually glass-bead or prismatic tape that bounces light straight back to its source. Bright neon color helps in daylight but does nothing at night without retroreflectivity. Choose pieces you will actually wear in August and keep on the bike year-round; consistency beats a perfect setup that stays in a drawer. A good starting kit is a pair of ankle bands, a roll of reflective tape for the bike, and a light sash or reflective strips on whatever you already wear.

Moving reflectors catch a driver's eye better than static ones, which is why reflective ankle bands are one of the most effective cheap safety items you can buy. Salzmann's bands use 3M Scotchlite material, wrap with hook-and-loop, and double as pant-leg straps to keep trousers out of the chain. How to choose reflective equipment

Retroreflective material

Glass-bead or prismatic tape and fabric bounce light back to its source. Neon fabric alone is a daytime aid. Look for the reflective rating or test it with a phone flashlight at a distance.

Placement that moves

Ankle bands, pedal reflectors and reflective shoe details create motion that reads as a cyclist. Pair them with static strips on the rear of the bike and helmet.

Breathability

Heavy vests get left at home in summer. Mesh vests, sashes and strips on clothing are easier to wear consistently in Texas heat.

Durability and washability

Reflective tape on the bike should be weatherproof and adhere to curved surfaces; clothing reflectives should survive washing without peeling.

Do I need reflectives if I have good lights?

Yes. Lights can fail, be blocked, or be aimed poorly, and reflectives work from any angle a driver's headlights hit. Ankle bands and rear reflective strips complement a taillight.

Where is the best place for reflective tape on the bike?

Rear-facing surfaces like the rack, fender, seatpost and helmet back; side-facing surfaces like rims, fork legs and crank arms for intersections. Keep it off moving brake parts.

Does neon yellow clothing help at night?

Only in daylight and dusk. At night, retroreflective material is what drivers see. Many good pieces combine both.

Is a vest too hot in summer?

Often. Mesh vests, sashes, ankle bands and reflective strips on a jersey or backpack offer similar visibility with less heat. The best gear is the gear you will wear.
