Race Face Chester Composite Platform Pedals

The Chester is the default recommendation for anyone who wants a big, grippy flat pedal without spending much. The nylon composite body is wide, the replaceable pins bite into sneakers, and the sealed bearings shrug off weather. On an e-bike the stock pedals are often tiny and slippery, and a pair of Chesters is one of the cheapest comfort upgrades there is. They are offered in many colors and use the standard 9/16-inch thread found on nearly all adult bikes; install with an 8 mm hex key from the back of the crank arm.

Key considerations

  • 9/16-inch thread fits almost all adult cranks; some kids and folding bikes use 1/2-inch
  • Pins are sharp — they will scar shins and scuff shoes
  • Left pedal is reverse-threaded
  • Composite body can scuff on curbs but rarely breaks

Pros

  • Huge grip
  • Durable and weather-sealed
  • Affordable

Considerations

  • Pins are aggressive
  • Wider than folding bikes can stow

Compatibility notes

  • 9/16-inch pedal threads (standard adult cranks)

Aluminum Folding Pedals, 9/16-Inch (generic)

Folding e-bikes come with folding pedals so the bike fits in a trunk, and the stock ones are usually small plastic units that flex and wear. The generic aluminum folding pedal is a clear upgrade: a larger platform, a positive latch, and sealed or at least serviceable bearings. Many brands sell what is essentially the same pedal. Check the thread size on your crank: most adult folders use 9/16-inch, but some budget bikes use 1/2-inch. The fold mechanism adds weight and a bit of play compared with fixed pedals, so do not expect mountain-bike stiffness.

Best for: Folding e-bikes with worn or flimsy stock pedals · Apartment and transit commuters who fold daily · Riders wanting a bigger platform that still folds

170 mm Square Taper Single Crankset, 44T with Chainguard (generic)

The typical hub-motor e-bike has a single front chainring on a square-taper crankset, and when a crank arm strips or the chainring wears hooked, the replacement is a generic 170 mm alloy crankset with a 44T or 46T ring and a plastic chainguard. These are sold by many sellers and are functionally interchangeable. The important checks are square-taper bottom bracket (not Octalink or Hollowtech), crank length, and chainring size; keep the same tooth count to preserve your gearing. A square-taper crank puller is needed for removal.

Best for: Replacing a stripped crank arm or worn chainring on a hub-motor e-bike · Bikes with a square-taper bottom bracket · Budget repairs
