Rack- and frame-mounted child seats for cargo and step-through bikes.
Carrying a child is one of the best things an e-bike does. The motor erases the extra weight, and a quiet ride to school or the park beats a car seat. It is also where the details genuinely matter. A child seat adds 20 to 40 pounds high on the bike, changes balance at stops, and puts a kid right next to a hot motor and a spinning wheel. Choosing a seat that fits your bike properly and mounting it correctly is not optional.
There are three mounting styles. Rear rack-mounted seats clamp to a rack and are the most common on e-bikes; they require a rack rated for the seat load, usually 25 kg or more, and rack tubing the seat clamp can grip. Rear frame-mounted seats clamp a bracket to the seat tube and hang the seat off it; they do not need a rack but require clear round seat tube space, which many e-bikes with internal batteries or step-through frames do not have. Front seats sit between the rider and the bar for younger kids; they need room on the top tube or a stem and can crowd the display and throttle.
Before buying, check your bike maker's stance on child seats; some explicitly support them, others prohibit them, and cargo and utility e-bikes are often designed around them. Look at rear dropout spacing, wheel size, and whether the rear shock on a full-suspension bike would be affected. Then think about the riding: a wide kickstand or a centerstand for loading, a footrest that keeps feet out of the spokes, a helmet that fits the child, and a plan for Texas heat, which means shade and plenty of water for a passenger who is not pedaling.
