Park Tool VP-1 Vulcanizing Patch Kit

The VP-1 is the traditional glue-on patch kit: round patches, a tube of vulcanizing fluid and sandpaper. Done right, the patch becomes part of the tube and lasts the life of the tube. Done wrong — too much glue, not waiting for it to go tacky, not pressing hard — it peels. This is the kit for the garage, where you can patch the tube properly and keep the glueless patches for the road. The glue tube dries out once opened, so it is worth buying fresh periodically. For e-bike owners with thick fat-tire tubes, the larger patches are welcome.

Park Tool GP-2 Super Patch Glueless Patch Kit

The GP-2 is a tiny box of self-adhesive patches and a sandpaper square that fits in any saddle bag. Glueless patches are the right roadside tool: no waiting for vulcanizing cement to flash off, no dried-up tube of glue when you finally need it. Scuff the tube, press the patch hard, reinstall. They are reliable on punctures from thorns and glass; they are not for large gashes or valve-base tears. Many riders buy two or three packs and stash one on each bike. Pair it with tire levers and a pump and you have a real flat kit for a few dollars.

Best for: Every saddle bag · Quick roadside repairs · Riders who let glue kits dry out

Pedro's Tire Levers (pair)

Pedro's levers are wide, flat, plastic levers that are very hard to break and do not chew up rims. That width is why they are the standard recommendation for fat and plus-size e-bike tires, where the bead is tight and the tube is thick. They hook onto a spoke while you work the second lever around. Two in a saddle bag weigh almost nothing. They are a little bulky for a jersey pocket and will eventually round off at the tip after many tires, at which point you buy another pair. For the money there is no reason to own anything else.
