Lezyne Strip Drive Pro 400 Rear Light

The Strip Drive Pro 400 is a very bright rear light, with a daytime flash mode that punches through midday sun and a wide strip of LEDs for side visibility. It straps to seatposts including aero shapes and charges by USB. Brightness at this level is most useful for daytime riding on open roads; at night you will run it on a lower mode. Lezyne's build quality is good and the mode memory is handy. It is pricier than the Cygolite Hotrod 50, and the extra output only matters if you ride a lot in daylight traffic.

Cygolite Hotrod 50 USB Taillight

The Hotrod 50 is a thin strip of bright red LEDs that mounts to a seatpost or seat stay with a rubber strap and charges by USB. Fifty lumens is plenty for a taillight, and the wide strip is visible from the side as well as behind. Several modes include a daytime flash that gets attention even in Texas sun. Runtime in flash mode is long. The strap fits round posts; for e-bikes with a rack that blocks the seatpost, mount it to a seat stay or buy a rack-mount light instead. It is a cheap, reliable improvement over most stock taillights.

Best for: Every commuter · Daytime visibility · Bikes with a free seatpost or stay

NiteRider Lumina 1200 Boost Headlight

The Lumina 1200 Boost is for riders who go faster or ride darker places than a suburban bike path: it throws 1200 lumens in boost mode, has a lock mode so it will not turn on in a bag, and a sturdy bar strap mount. It is a popular light for eMTB and fat-tire riders who hit unlit trails, and for Class 3 commuters covering ground quickly. Runtime at full power is short, so you use boost as needed and cruise on medium. It is heavier and more expensive than the Cygolite Metro Plus. NiteRider has a long track record of durable housings.

Best for: Trail and unlit path riders · Faster Class 3 commutes · Riders who want boost on demand
