A step-over e-bike uses the traditional diamond frame: a top tube running from the head tube to the seat tube, creating two triangles that make the frame stiff and efficient. This is the shape most sporty e-bikes use — commuters, eMTBs, gravel and fitness bikes — because it transfers power well, handles precisely and carries weight without flex. It also comes in more frame sizes than step-through designs, which is why it is the better choice for tall riders and anyone who cares about a precise fit.
The obvious downside is mounting. You have to swing a leg over the saddle or the top tube, which is awkward with a loaded rear rack, a child seat or a stiff hip, and harder to do gracefully in work clothes. Standover height matters: you should be able to straddle the top tube with both feet flat and an inch or two of clearance. Riders under about 5'4" often find full-size step-over frames tall, and many 26 or 27.5 inch step-over e-bikes are built for a 5'6" to 6'4" range. Compact 20 inch step-over designs exist for shorter riders.
Beyond the frame, step-over e-bikes span the full spectrum of motors, batteries and uses, so use the frame shape as one filter and evaluate the rest normally: hydraulic brakes, realistic range, sensor type, included equipment and parts support. If you are tall, heavy or ride fast, the stiffness of a step-over is a real benefit; if you mostly putter around the neighborhood with groceries, a step-through may serve you better.
