Garmin Varia RCT715 Radar Camera Taillight

The RCT715 stacks three things: Garmin's rear radar that warns you on a paired head unit or phone when a car approaches from behind, a bright taillight, and a camera that records continuously and saves clips on incidents. The radar alone changes how you ride in suburban traffic because you stop guessing about what is behind you. The penalty for combining everything is weight, price and a battery that lasts a few hours with the camera running. If you do not care about video, the cheaper RTL515 radar light is the better buy.

Best for: Commuters on roads without bike lanes · Riders with a Garmin or phone to show radar alerts · Riders who want incident video

Garmin Varia RTL515 Radar Taillight

The RTL515 is a taillight with rear radar that tells a paired Garmin head unit or phone app how many cars are approaching and how fast. On the frontage roads and two-lane stretches around Frisco it is hard to overstate how much calmer that makes riding. The light itself is bright and visible a long way off, and the runtime is good. It mounts to the seatpost with a quarter-turn mount. Without a compatible display the radar is useless, so budget for the app or a head unit. Riders who want video should look at the RCT715.

Best for: Road-heavy commutes · Riders with a Garmin or smartphone on the bars · Rural and suburban roads
